Kim bob

14 September 2005 - 4:08pm -- LaQuisha

Pronounced: Kim pup
Forget Sushi darlings it so 20th century, open your mind to Kim bob. Yes, once again I have fallen prey to the charms of my Korean next door neighbor and have been having a wonderful time in the kitchen.
It turns out that a good old fashioned cook-up is a cross cultural phenomenon.
Rice: Short grained rice cooked by absorption method
Add: Salt, sesame oil, toasted sesame seeds
Use Kim seaweed sheets (not Japanese Nori)
Work while the rice is hot.
Must! Use yellow radish
Add: omelet, carrots, pickled yellow radish, tuna, wilted spinach.
Assemble using spoon for hot rice. Will not need to wet Kim to seal it as the steam will do it for you.
Slice with a sharp knife, once again no wetting the knife as the rice has oil in it.
Delicious, and left over ingredients can be used as garnish.

PS, regarding yesterdays riddle: the correct answer is: Elections, that's right Elections.
And you should vote for Aunty Helen!

We shall never speak of it

13 September 2005 - 4:08pm -- LaQuisha

There is something happening in New Zealand at the moment which I will not name. If you think about it you will know what I am referring too. The media is saturated with it and there are bill boards everywhere. If you still haven't worked out to which I am referring, let's say that it will all be over on Saturday night.
I am well and truly sick of it.
That is all.

Kim with rice

12 September 2005 - 4:08pm -- LaQuisha

My last entry was a bit cruel wasn't it? The suburbs aren't all bad. For one thing there is absolutely no privacy, making it child's play for me to befriend the neighbors with my girlish good looks and coquettish manner.
The next-door neighbors are a delightful newly wed couple. Much nicer than the family on the other side of the section who spend their whole lives screaming at their kids. I do think that I might be calling CYPS soon. I know it will totally fuck the children's lives, but what price is my peace and quiet I ask you?
At any rate, it turns out that the bride is a Korean woman who is quite the most amazing cook.
Here are some things that you should try:
Kim - basically oiled, salted and roasted Japanese nori sheets (although don't mention this around Koreans, several bloody invasions and decades of mistreating their woman folk have left Korea a bit bitter about comparisons with Japan)
We had Kim with rice. The basic technique seemed to be to put a piece of Kim on top of the rice then using your chopsticks pick it up and squeezing the edges together grabbing a good amount of rice.
This was especially nice with a fried egg on top of the rice.
Speaking of eggs, a packet of noodles can be turned into quite the most delightful meal by the addition of an egg towards the end of cooking. Just swish the egg around a bit in the soup to scramble it. Finish with cheese on top. I know! Cheese on Asian noodles - bizarre but fantastic!
Don't forget that once the noodles are all eaten you can add a little rice to the remaining soup. This must be the oriental version of sopping up gravy with the curst of bread. Quite inspired!
Finally: boil salted water, add diced beef and radish. Bring to the boil and skim off any scum that forms. Add a little beef stock powder (any Korean brand will do) and a little garlic.
Delicious! You can even add a little cooked rice to the soup when serving, for a hardier meal.
Anyway, I must return to my new found friend as she is doing something with dried green things.

The 'burbs

11 September 2005 - 4:08pm -- LaQuisha

Bonjour la darlings,

I've been hiding out in suburban Johnsonville, not much to report, except that the idea of living here full time makes me want to kill myself.

God bless the suburbs, but at this stage of my life J.ville is a little too sleepy.

Though, I may be being a flaming hypocrite, as Melrose is hardly New York City.

Cohabitating

9 September 2005 - 4:08pm -- LaQuisha

Well, here's a thing, I went out on a date last night and went all the way.
For many years I have been the model of chaste wifely servitude. So I feel somewhat apprehensive revealing this to you, dear heart.
But sweet Jesus, it's good to get 'back in the saddle'.
As long as I avoid an unwanted pregnancy, I ask myself: what harm can it do?
In other news, my ex-husband and I are still cohabitating. I can't recommend it, but since I am keeping the house it did seem cruel to throw him out on the street. Bless him, but I can't take another moment of this, so I am going to stay at a dear friend's house for a few nights.
I expect to come home and find that my lovely pussy's arthritis is playing up, from lack of medication, and all the pot plants dead.
God bless you until next time.

Breaking up

8 September 2005 - 4:08pm -- LaQuisha

Well the pop song is quite correct: breaking up is hard to do.
I have had to hand over the keys to my beloved Alfa and my Platinum American Express card.
I am now driving a Nana Wagon, which barely accommodates the beehive, and using eft-pos.
To add insult to injury it seems that the ex-husband wants the mid-century lounge furniture.
It's all so horribly depressing.
The last straw was this morning when I impulse brought a bottle of Diet Coke which promised a lucky punter the chance to win their own Platinum card.
You can guess what was under the bottle top...
"Try Again"

Farewell

26 August 2005 - 4:08pm -- LaQuisha

Pussy cat, pussy cat, where have you been?
Well, dear heart, I've been getting a divorce. Citing irreconcilable differences husband and I have resolved to go our separate ways.
This explains my extended, and unexplained, leave of absence from my lovely website.
I have been quite unsure about how this change in my circumstances will affect my preaching on the virtues of the leisurely life. So, instead, I am now changing course, and will now be expounding upon the topic of "Happiness", which is something we all desire.
I'm also going to be taking a leaf from the USA media's book, and doing a bit of soul searching in a public arena. It worked for Miss Oprah.
There is a bright side: I can now claim to have an ex-husband, how 80s!

Londoners are in my thoughts and prayers

8 July 2005 - 4:08pm -- LaQuisha

I've gone suburban (that's like going bush for Queens), I've had two days at home chatting and shopping online, I quite like it really. But I must remember to leave the house and have a life tomorrow.
This was rudely interrupted by a friend on the MSN telling me that bad things were afoot in the great old city of London.
My thoughts and prayers go out to my London audience, in this most trying time.
It is quite a challenge to be frivolous in such trying times, but I think remaining positive and keeping a sense of humor is a boon in the face of adversity.
It does remind me of September 11 (except it was the 12th here thanks to the international date line). I am just grateful that when I woke this morning that no further attacks had been carried out. And I was even more delighted to hear that the tube and most of the busses are back to normal today.
I, as do many New Zealanders, share a special bond with Britain. My mother is British, and as you know, I was born on the ballroom floor of an ocean line which was en-route to New Zealand. How mother missed the contractions is a mystery to everyone - Mother never could bear to miss a party.
We have been having a delightful few weeks hosting the Lions rugby team and they played the length of New Zealand, why just last week I was sitting in the sun chatting with a delightful Welsh man in search of some lunch. The tour has reaffirmed the bridges between our two great nations.
I wish to extend any comfort I can to those distressed by the recent events.
God Bless us all.

l'Atelier McTaylor

13 June 2005 - 4:08pm -- LaQuisha

Bon Soir mes Darlings,
Though I do love the sound of my own voice, I promise that this will be a bijoux speechette.
First of all, welcome to this opening of l'Atelier (luh tur leh ee) McTaylor. Thank you to everyone for being here tonight. Please help yourself to food and drink. Oh, I see you already have! Bless.
Miggs McTaylor is a sartorial genius, why just look at me (swish) and check out my 16th century arse! And if she can make moi look this good, imagine what she can do with you, and your slightly more, shall we say, normal, proportions.
Miggs is quite modest—she didn't want me to make a fuss over her. So later on we can all play a fun game of: find the designer.
McTaylors' collections will be previewed on a monthly basis here—and Miggs... I do hope I am on the invitation list! Once you have made your selections from the collection each and every piece is completely customizable.
Miggs also has a ready to wear line planned for launch in August, which will utilize the soft natural fabrics we all so adore: wools, silks, denims, and my personal fav. Merino.
Finally, special thanks to Irene, Ara and everyone else who has made tonight such a divine event. A special thanks to McTaylors clients, some of whom have been with McTaylor for years.
And thank you for believing is fashion, a power that can transform lives.
God bless us all
